Tours of the Historic Old Kentucky Home Boardinghouse

Thomas Wolfe and His Writing (All Grades)

This is a fun and exciting way to explore the Old Kentucky Home Boardinghouse with a guided tour focusing on his youth growing up in Asheville in the early 20 th century and the events that influenced his novel, Look Homeward, Angel. During the tour students will read selected passages from Wolfe's novel in the rooms that inspired his writing.   This tour will also address the changes in technology and how that impacted the lives of people during the early 20 th century.  

This tour can be catered to you and your class. Just contact our Education Specialist, Christian Dwight, with a program idea and she will work with you to develop a specific program for your class.

 

Mrs. Wolfe's World Tour (Grades 1-4)

NC Standard Course of Study Goals: Social Studies

Grade 1: Competency Goals 1, 3, 6 and 7.
Grade 2: Competency Goals 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8.
Grade 3: Competency Goals 2, 3, 5 and 6.
Grade 4: Competency Goals 1, 6 and 7.

This tour uses Mrs. Wolfe's perspective of life at the Old Kentucky Home to help students in grades 1-4 explore different ways that families operate today and in the past.   Students experience Mrs. Wolfe's life in the boardinghouse through a blend of inquiry-based learning, role-play, and hands-on exploration.   Through pre and post visit activities students are challenged to express their ideas/analysis of what they've learned in writing and/or mathematical exercises.   This tour is especially recommended for Women's History Month.

NC Standard Course of Study Goals: Social Studies

Grade 4: Competency Goals 1, 4, 6 and 7.
Grade 5: Competency Goals 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6.

This tour explores the impact of changes in life in North Carolina and America on the life of Thomas Wolfe's mother Julia, with a particular focus on her role as a businesswoman and owner of The Old Kentucky Home boarding house.   Pre- and post-visit material encourages students to explore the impact of historical developments and economic decisions through their own reading, writing, or other creative expressions.

 

History Detectives Tour (Grades 8 & 11)

Grade 8: Competency Goals 4, 5 and 6.
Grade 11: Competency Goals 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The purpose of the History Detectives tour is to introduce students to some of the methods of historical investigation, with a particular emphasis on how objects and architecture can reveal aspects of the past.   As an integral part of the investigation, students will need to understand the larger historical context of late 19 th and early 20 th century America.   Their exploration of the physical evidence will then underscore their study of the written sources.

Toys of the early 20th century (Grades 1-4)

This class is offered for our younger visitors to learn about the toys in the early 1900's.   See and learn about the toys Thomas Wolfe would've played with as he grew up in the boardinghouse.   Students will finish the class activity with a craft activity, making a toy they can take home.   (30 minutes)

Chores of the Old Kentucky Home (Grades 1-4)

If you want your students to have a fun hands-on experience at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, this is the class for you.   Students will learn about the chores that Thomas Wolfe did while living at the Old Kentucky Home and then, do them.   Hauling coal, grinding coffee, using a washboard, and more, your students will learn the work it took to run the boardinghouse and how technology changed the way we live.   (30 minutes)

Pack Square Walking Tour (Grades 1-5, 8 & 11)

This tour focuses on Asheville's public square as it appeared in Wolfe's life, his writing and as it appears today.   Photographs of the square taken at various time periods illustrate the changes that have been and will continue to be constant in the town's history.   Reading from Wolfe's work regarding the square help bring this aspect of his writing to life.   (40 Minutes)

Riverside Cemetery Walking Tour (Grades 1-4, 8 & 11)

This is a walking tour of Asheville's public cemetery where several notable persons are buried including Thomas Wolfe and his family.   The program focuses on persons, buried in the cemetery, who became characters in Wolfe's writings, especially Look Homeward, Angel .   This tour also focuses on those that are buried that played major roles in city, regional and national history. (30 Minutes)
