Join us this holiday season for Thomas Wolfe’s Gimcrack Day. Children of all ages will have the occasion to make a holiday ornament, see Thomas Wolfe’s boyhood home, and learn about old holiday customs. Thomas Wolfe wrote of his childhood; “He was liberally dowered with bright-painted gimcracks upon Christmas Day; and in his heart he hated those who advocated ‘useful’ gifts.” A Gimcrack, pronounced “jimˌkrak,” is a cheap and showy ornament; a knickknack. Children will be admitted to the house tour free, participate in bonus hands-on activities, enjoy a hot drink in the visitor center, and make a shiny gimcrack.
