Thomas Wolfe's epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward,
Angel, depicted life in a turn-of-the-century American city and made
his mother's boarding house a literary landmark. Born in 1900, Wolfe
was heavily influenced by life in the Old Kentucky Home. He spent
ten years of his childhood in the boarding house, which was run by
his mother, Julia. Wolfe's novels and short stories depict the lives
of Asheville's citizens, Julia Wolfe's boarders, and the tempestuous
Wolfe family themselves.
